WHY FOCUS ON SOLAR

Approach

Solar power is one of the most rapidly growing renewable sources of electricity and unlike other renewable energy sources, it is free and in great abundance within Africa.

In addition, it is inexhaustible and relatively easy to access with its equipment being more durable and requiring less maintenance compared to other renewable energy sources which makes it particularly suited to the needs of lower income & rural households.

ADVANTAGES OF SOLAR

  • Low investment, low maintenance and hence within the reach of many
  • No technical expertise required, works once charged
  • Clean, safe (less accidents, no harmful fumes)
  • Strong enough light for reading
  • Environmentally friendly
  • Mobile Charging facility
  • Ability to power Radio & TV

COOK STOVES

We are also keen on distributing energy efficient wood and charcoal cook stoves which would reduce toxic emissions and the degradation of our forest cover which is currently below 2% of our total land mass.

The stoves result in fuel savings of up to 50% thereby saving families money or time spent fetching firewood; their improved heat transfer means they also cook faster reducing time spent cooking.

The main factor hindering the switch to clean and safe energy solutions such as solar lanterns or cook stoves remains the inability of many to afford the total cost of a unit versus the much lower daily expenditure on kerosene or in the case of firewood, no spend at all - this is the challenge we work to address.

MAKING PRODUCTS ACCESSIBLE

FINANCING

SunTec works mainly with women groups and primarily focuses on facilitating group lending in order to ensure that a good number of Kenyan homes can affordably access our products.

 EFFICIENT DISTRIBUTION MODEL

Our distribution is based on working within already established networks at constituency level to ensure last mile distribution at an affordable cost to end users.
